The Sibling Space
Your experiences as a sibling are part of what make you, you.
Welcome
to
The Sibling Space
Thanks for your interest in our teen sibling program!

Here you can hang out, make art, eat snacks, and connect with peers who understand your world. No explanations required. We’re building something new in 2026, and we want you to be part of it.
About the Sibling Space
At 18 Hands, we’re building community for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We believe that means supporting the whole family, including siblings.

The Sibling Space is a program designed specifically for teens who have a sibling in our community. It’s a chance to step out of your usual role at home, meet people who share your experience, and just be for a few hours.
We are starting with two gatherings in 2026. We plan to add more over time as we learn from participants. Our goal is to create something that actually works for the teens who show up, so your input matters.
The Sibling Space is based on the Sibshops format, a nationally recognized peer support model for siblings of people with disabilities. Our events are adapted for a high school audience.

Who The Sibling Space Is For

Information for Teens
The Sibling Space is for you if you:
-
Are in high school (roughly 14-17 years old)
-
Have a sibling with a disability
-
Are at least a little curious about meeting other sibs with similar experiences
Bonus points if you like snacks and low-key (but fun!) activities. You don’t have to be an extrovert, and you don’t need to know anyone else who’s coming. Some people love to share and talk, while others would rather connect through activities or just being in the room. Both are completely fine.
In other words, you are welcome to show up exactly as you are.
Information for Parents
We know signing your teenager up for something new takes a little faith. If your child meets the criteria, here are a few more things you should know:
-
This is not therapy or group counseling. It’s a peer gathering, more like a structured hang than a support group.
-
Groups are intentionally small (about 6-10 teens) so no one gets lost in the crowd, but large enough that participants don’t feel overly pressured.
-
Events are led by a trained, certified Sibshop facilitator who is herself an adult sibling.
-
We take confidentiality seriously and won’t share what your teen says in the room, but we will contact you if we have concerns about their safety.
You’re welcome to contact us before the event if you have questions or want to talk through whether it’s a good fit.

What happens at a
Sibling Space
gathering?
Each gathering is a little different, but here’s a rough idea of what to expect:
-
Some kind of icebreaker or opening activity to get everyone comfortable
-
A hands-on creative activity (think collaging or other arts and crafts), which we may adapt depending on the group
-
Connection-based games and small group conversations about sibling experiences with others who get it
-
Sharing information that is relevant to siblings and families
-
Food, for obvious reasons (let us know of any dietary restrictions when you sign up)
-
Closing thoughts and optional feedback
We keep a loose agenda so we can follow the energy of the group. If something isn’t working, we’ll change it. The goal is for everyone to leave feeling like it was worth their time.
Each event runs about 3 hours.

Meet Your Facilitator
The Sibling Space is led by Rachel Holzwart, 18Hands’ Sibling Support Lead.
Rachel is a trained and certified Sibshop facilitator and, most importantly, a sibling herself. Her brother Maury is autistic and lives in New Hampshire. She’s spent many years figuring out what it means to be a sibling and is excited to build a space where teens don’t have to figure that out alone.

Outside of work you will probably find her on a trail. She thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2022 and the Colorado Trail in 2025 and loves the weird, silly energy that time spent outdoors tends to bring out in people. She also loves seeing live music, doing yoga, making up nonsensical songs about her dog, and of course meeting other sibs.
