OUR MISSION
18 Hands Community builds meaningful connections and workforce opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) by harnessing the motivational power of the human–dog bond and combining vocational learning, supported employment pathways, and inclusive community spaces.
Through its social enterprise, GoodWork Dog Cookie Co., participants develop workplace skills, build confidence, and progress toward employment in a real, community-integrated small-business setting.
ABOUT US
18 Hands Community was founded by parents of young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As our children became adults, we found ourselves asking the same question many families ask: What comes next?
We kept coming back to two essential needs: community and meaningful work.
From there, a simple idea emerged. If we wanted to build both, what could bring people together naturally? The answer was already part of our daily lives—our shared love of dogs.
18 Hands Community creates inclusive, community-based spaces where adults with IDD can connect, contribute, and grow. Through our social enterprise, GoodWork Dog Cookie Co., participants develop real workplace skills in a supportive environment, building confidence, independence, and a sense of purpose.
At our core, we believe that everyone deserves to belong, contribute, and be recognized for what they can do.
WHY 18?
The number 18 represents new beginnings, independence, and life. Across cultures, it’s a symbol of adulthood, self-determination, and good fortune. For us, it reflects the purpose of the 18 Hands: creating opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to build meaningful lives filled with connection, growth, and possibility.

We believe that 18 Hands symbolizes the collective power of caregiving and support, embodying the numerous hands - those of caregivers, family members, friends, and community members - who are integral to everyday living. Each pair of hands represents a commitment to partnership and collaboration, underscoring the idea that together we can build an inclusive environment that promotes well-being and empowerment.
WHO WE ARE
We are a nonprofit social enterprise. 18 Hands is dedicated to empowering adults with disabilities by providing meaningful jobs and avenues for personal growth. As a social enterprise, we prioritize people and pets over profits, reinvesting our earnings back into the organization to further our mission. The funds we generate support our programs, allowing us to offer job training, skill-building workshops, and other opportunities tailored to the needs of our community members. By maintaining a self-sufficient and sustainable business, we aim to create a more inclusive community where everyone can reach their full potential. Together, we can make this vision a reality!
